About Trauma Support for Schools

Trauma Support for Schools is an independent educational website for teachers, school counsellors, administrators, and families. It publishes practical, source-cited guidance on supporting students who have experienced trauma, and on looking after the adults who support them.

What this site is

The site covers six areas of practice: trauma-informed classroom strategies, staff wellbeing, identifying students who may be experiencing trauma, family trauma and the opioid crisis, trauma and special education, and connecting students to community mental health services. Every guide cites the research and organisational guidance it draws on, and is written to be used by working school staff, not just read.

Everything published here is educational: practical guidance to read alongside your school's own policies and the professional judgement of the counsellors and administrators who know the individual child. If someone is in crisis, call or text 988 in the US or Canada.

The archive

Alongside the guides, this site keeps a free resource archive: the materials of the virtual summit How to Support Students and Educators Dealing With Trauma, its resource list, and a widely used educator guide on common trauma symptoms in students, first published by the Cross-State Collaborative to Support Schools in the Opioid Crisis. The collaborative's work, supporting schools across Appalachian states through the opioid crisis, is recorded on its own page.

How content is made

Guides are researched from publicly available sources (federal agencies, research networks, and professional associations), written in plain language, and reviewed before publication. Our editorial policy sets out the standards, including how sources are chosen and how corrections are handled.

Contact

Corrections, resource suggestions, and questions about the site are welcome, especially from school counsellors and administrators. A contact form will be available on this page soon.
